Laser Gum Lift

WHAT IS IT

A Laser Gum Lift is a dental procedure that repositions the gum line to reveal more tooth and less gum when smiling.

It may be performed as part of a planned smile-design process to harmonise gingival contours before finalising crowns or veneers, or as a simple, localised gingivectomy to expose a deep cavity margin so a restoration can be completed more predictably.

HOW IS IT DONE

Traditional technique:

Conventional crown-lengthening involves lifting the gum around the necks of the teeth to expose the underlying bone. The crestal bone is then surgically reduced to the desired level, and the gum is sutured into its new position. A periodontal dressing is often placed and may remain for up to two weeks.

Laser-assisted technique (our approach):

Using both hard- and soft-tissue lasers —specifically the Fotona LightWalker — we perform the gum lift using a flapless technique. The predetermined gum contour is gently sculpted with the laser, followed by laser-assisted bone reshaping performed beneath the gum without raising a traditional flap.

  • No sutures
  • No periodontal dressing
  • Faster healing
  • Most patients can return to work within two days

Depending on the extent of the procedure, new restorations or cosmetic crowns/veneers may be completed immediately or delayed 6–11 weeks to allow tissues to stabilise.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR A LASER GUM LIFT

Because the procedure is conservative and minimally invasive, most patients tolerate it well.

Patients on blood-thinning medication should consult their GP or specialist about whether temporary cessation is appropriate.

In many cases, patients can resume their medication later the same day.

WHEN SHOULD I START PLANNING THE PROCEDURE

For major life events (e.g., weddings, graduations, photoshoots), we recommend planning 6–12 months in advance. Some smile-design cases require multiple procedures or staged treatment to achieve optimal results.

Comprehensive consultation—and sometimes follow-up planning appointments—is essential to ensure a smooth treatment journey.

WHAT RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS SHOULD I BE AWARE OF

All risks and benefits will be discussed in detail during your consultation.

Potential risks and complications associated with laser gingival contouring, gingivectomy, or crown lengthening include (but are not limited to):

  • Bleeding, inflammation, discomfort or swelling
  • Post-operative infection
  • Temporary sensitivity
  • Irregular or uneven gum contours requiring refinement
  • Delayed healing

Laser-assisted techniques generally significantly reduce these risks compared with traditional surgical methods.

Outcomes depend on case selection, tissue response, and clinician skill. Individual results will vary.
